“We could’ve shortchanged you,” Rick tells us, somewhere around the seven-minute mark of “Sixteen”, “but because we love you, we go that extra mile”. And it wouldn’t be much like Mr. Rozay to shortchange us, now would it? “Sixteen” is a sprawling eight minutes of excess, brought to us by a man who’s built a career on just that. Sonically, we’re talking plush, luxurious, sax-laced soul courtesy of J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League–pretty much signature Ross. The highlight though, undeniably, is the song’s second half, with 3 Stacks diving into his longest monologue in years, delivered in the same dizzying, philosophical deadpan he’s employed on the other dozen or so unforgettable verses he’s resurfaced for in recent years. If God Forgives, I Don’t isn’t Rick’s strongest effort yet, it’s certainly not lacking in marquee moments. And “Sixteen” doesn’t disappoint.
